Drunk Northumbria Police officer in hot water after throwing punches at hotel manager

A drunk policeman has been punished after swinging punches at a hotel manager.

The sergeant also "kicked out a community support officer" during the skirmish.

However, he is free to return to work after receiving a final written warning from bosses.

The officer - whose name has not been made public by Northumbria Police - was dealt with at a behind-closed-doors misconduct meeting.

The incident emerged after the force released minutes of July's meeting.

It states: "The officer, whilst drunk off duty, was abusive to police officers and hotel staff.

"The officer kicked out a community support officer and swung punches at the hotel manager, which reportedly missed him."

The meeting was held in private after an internal investigation found his actions were misconduct, but not gross misconduct.

Officers who may have committed gross misconduct are subject to public misconduct hearings.

The force did not disclose where the incident occured.

However, a spokesperson added: "We always expect our officers and staff to maintain the highest standards of behaviour at all times.

“No criminal complaint was made against the officer in question and the matter was referred to internal disciplinary proceedings.

“The officer was found to have a case to answer for misconduct and received a final written warning.

"In reaching this decision, the panel took into account the officer’s record of service, that he was remorseful and that his actions were out of character”.
