Drunk PC who abused bouncers, bar staff and even his own colleagues avoids the sack

A policeman who verbally abused his colleagues as they arrested him can keep his job.

Police were called after off-duty Northumbria PC Adam Don abused staff and bouncers at a Sunderland pub.

When officers arrived, Don turned his attention to them and continued his tirade before they arrested him for being drunk and disorderly.

Shamed Don received a penalty notice for the offence.

However, his actions landed him before a police misconduct hearing on Monday.

The three-person panel at Houghton le Spring station handed Don a final written warning.

It means Don, whose LinkedIn profile states he is "passionate about crime and the criminal justice system", can resume his career.

Superintendent Steve Ammari, head of professional standards at Northumbria Police, said: “Following an incident involving an off-duty officer, we pursued misconduct proceedings.

“Subsequently, the panel of an independently-chaired hearing has today (Monday) concluded that they should receive a final written warning.

“We expect officers and staff to maintain the highest standards at all times and if anyone is found to have fallen below these we are committed to taking appropriate action.”

The PC had faced claims he had engaged in discreditable conduct during the July 7 incident last year.

He could have been sacked following the one-day hearing for breaching the force's standards of professional behaviour.
