Drunk man beheads nephew with chainsaw 'while dreaming of cutting coconut tree'

A drunk uncle beheaded his sleeping nephew with a chainsaw and then claimed he was dreaming of cutting a coconut tree, say police.

Roger Paje, 48, is accused of cutting off his family member Eduardo Rosquitos' hands after decapitating him following a binge drinking session.

Mr Rosquitos, 30, suffered a gruesome death while he was passed out on the concrete floor at Paje's home in the Philippines on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Witness Edgardo Canete told officers he was startled out of his sleep by the sound of the chainsaw's engine and then looked on as Mr Rosquitos' head was severed from his body.

Mr Rosquitos, a construction worker, was killed instantly and his hands were then cut off as well, said police.

Fearing for his life, terrified Mr Canete jumped out of a window and ran away from the house - in the village of Bool East, on Biliran island - in a desperate bid to raise the alarm.

The trio started drinking at about 8am on Sunday.

Mr Rosquitos was killed about five hours later after falling asleep.

Paje was arrested when officers arrived at the bloody scene.

He told investigators he didn't know what he was doing because he was dreaming of cutting down a coconut tree as he sawed off his nephew's head, the Philippine Star reported.

Mr Canete told detectives that Paje's eyes were closed when he killed the victim, local police chief Isidoro Ancero Jnr told the Manila Bulletin.

Police recovered the chainsaw that was used to kill Mr Rosquitos.

Paje was held in custody at a local police station and will be charged with murder.

After the killing, police shared a photo of the victim's mutilated body with local media.
