Drunk Johnstone dad punched girlfriend and called her a "fatty"

A Johnstone man who pushed his girlfriend’s face into a couch before punching her will return to court later this month to learn his fate.

Christopher Gemmell, of Arran Drive, admitted that on September 11 he called his girlfriend a ‘fatty’ and punched her after pushing her face into a couch.

Procurator fiscal depute Caitlin O’Hare told Paisley Sheriff Court: "Around 12 noon on September 11, Gemmell left the family home in Arran Drive, Johnstone, due to feeling angry.

“Gemmell told his partner Sharmane Webster that he wouldn’t know how long he would be.

“Around 7pm that night Ms Webster was in the living room with her one-year-old daughter and the accused’s brother.

“Gemmell let himself in via the back door and made his way from the kitchen to the living room where he started to shout and swear.

“He was calling her, ‘a fatty,’ ‘a cow,’ ‘a b***h,’ ‘a slut’ and ‘a slag,’ telling her to ‘f**k off.’

“Gemmell continued to act in an aggressive manner.

“The accused’s brother took the couple’s daughter upstairs away from the commotion.

“Gemmell then lunged at Ms Webster, grabbing her by the hair and slamming her head into the side of the couch.

“Gemmell then got on top of Ms Webster and punched her right thigh.

“Ms Webster left the house and went into the garden where she contacted the police.

“The police attended and arrested Gemmell, taking him to Greenock Police Station where he was cautioned and charged.”

Defence agent Paul Lynch told the court that Gemmell, 33, and Ms Webster have been in a relationship for three years and that they have a one-year-old daughter.

Mr Lynch said: “Ms Webster suffers from agoraphobia and Gemmell is her carer.

“So when the couple fall out, he leaves the house leaving her to look after the baby.

“He went out that day and she was phoning for him to come back home.

“He went and got drunk and he accepts he acted in an unacceptable way.

“He moved out immediately and has been living with his parents.

“It is very much that the couple are trying to keep the relationship alive and Ms Webster is asking for him to come home.

“He has had an insight into his behaviour and knows it was completely unacceptable.”

Sheriff Gillian Craig deferred sentence for the Crown to obtain Ms Webster’s views on a non-harassment order.

Gemmell will return to Paisley Sheriff Court on November 18 for sentencing.
