Fans of the Comedy Central series Drunk Historyare crestfallen after it was revealed that the series is being cancelled after six seasons.
The series, in which celebrities describe events from world history while inebriated, had been renewed for a seventh season last summer, but Deadlinenow reports that production has been abandoned for good.
The website cites high production costs – with each episode featuring period reenactments of the described events – as a factor in its cancellation.
Season six of Drunk History has been nominated for three Emmy awards, including Outstanding Variety Sketch series, in which category it has been nominated every year since the bracket’s inception in 2015.
Drunk History also featured a number of high-profile guest stars over the years, involved in both the narration and the re-enactments, including Ryan Gosling, Laura Dern, and Don Cheadle.
Fans of the series took to social media to lament the show’s surprise cancellation, with one person noting they were “gutted”.
One viewer wrote: “Hello @ComedyCentral very politely and respectfully. in regards to the one Drunk History...... UNCANCEL THE DAMN SHOW :))) please.”
Many pointed out the show’s legitimate educational value, as well as its record for re-telling events from history that involve marginalised people, such as when the series covered the Stonewall riots.
Civil rights activist Charlotte Clymer wrote: “Drunk History legitimately centred queer history, particularly trans and non-binary folks, in a way that was authentic, hilarious, and accessible. The show should have been continued. This really sucks.”
“Drunk History taught me more about Black, Latino, Queer and Women’s history than school EVER did,” another Twitter user wrote.
Another fan posted: “I’m a little sad. As goofy as Drunk History is, I’ve honestly ended up learning a lot of interesting things from the show, as someone who immediately has to Google every single topic afterwards.”
