Drunk HGV driver spotted 'swerving across lanes' on M6 - then nearly went wrong way over roundabout

The driver of a HGV was spotted by witnesses 'swerving across lanes' on the M6 motorway before police stopped him.

Officers from Merseyside Police say they pulled the suspected drunk driver over before he could travel the wrong way across a roundabout near Ashton-in-Makerfield, in Wigan.

In a tweet, the force's Roads Policing Unit said the driver had been stopped at Haydock Island and went on to test three times over the drink drive limit.

A police spokesperson also published an image of the cab of the HGV after it had been pulled over.

The tweet read: "Thank you to the member of public who reported this HGV which had been swerving across all lanes on the M6.

"Thankfully we were nearby and stopped it before it went the wrong way around Haydock Island.

"The driver was 3x the drink limit and will be charged & remanded."

Merseyside Police also included a picture of the completed roadside drink driving test, which showed the driver's blood alcohol level.
