Drunk football fans 'too much' as some square up to Leicester Square riot police

Some fans in central London have started leaving Leicester Square because people are throwing beers and the atmosphere has become “too much”.

Huge crowds are gathering across London ahead of the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy tonight.

Thulase Sivasothy, 23, from south London said: “We’ve just come out of there because it was too much. They’re trying to barricade the road and everything.

“We were just in Soho now and it’s crazy. There’s so much passion in London today.”

Eric Pinto, 23, from London also added: “People are throwing beers. But that’s England, that’s how we celebrate. I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like if we win.

“I’ve got a good feeling about tonight. Everything’s been going right up until now. It’s coming home.”

The area around Wembley is packed with crowds.

A spokesperson for Wembley Stadium said: “We are dealing with an incident that occurred at the outer security perimeter area of the stadium, with support from police.

“Safety measures were quickly activated in the relevant areas and there were no security breaches of people without tickets getting inside the stadium.”

England fans in central London said they were nervous ahead of England’s clash with Italy.

Drew Pearce, 23, from south London, told PA he thinks the game will be “nerve-wracking”.

Jazzy Singh, 26, from Oxford, added: “I’m feeling nervous, very nervous. It’s coming home. It’s not even coming home – it’s staying home, because it’s already in England. It’s been so beautiful, the atmosphere. It’s banging. Italy’s got no chance.”

He also said that if England win, “police will need to mop (him) up and take (him) home”.

Mickey Singh, 21, also from Oxford, added that he plans to celebrate for the whole week if England win.
