'Drunk driver' smashes van into McDonald's scaffolding

A city centre road remains closed after an allegedly drunk driver smashed a van into scaffolding on a McDonald's restaurant.

The collision occurred at 2.10am today on the corner of Great Charlotte Street and Ranelagh Street , causing significant damage to railings and scaffolding on the building.

Merseyside Police said a 32-year-old man from the North Liverpool area was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving and remains in custody.

A spokeswoman for the force said there were no injuries caused in the collision, which involved a Ford transit van, although minor damage was caused to a taxi.

When the ECHO attended the scene this morning the van had been removed but barriers remain in place.

Part of Ranelagh Street will remain closed while the scaffolding is checked by experts to ensure its safety.
