Drunk driver allegedly tows burning trailer for 2km around Adelaide streets

The trailer was significantly damaged by the fire.

A driver allegedly found towing a trailer that had ignited and fallen on its side was nearly six times over the legal blood-alcohol limit, South Australian police have said.

Police said an ambulance crew saw the van towing the trailer about 4:00am on Sunday on Kings Road, in Parafield Gardens.

The van had been towing the trailer for about 2 kilometres, they said.

A diesel fuel container, which had ignited, was found inside the trailer, prompting paramedics to flag down the driver.

The man stopped the van on Kings Road, where police and fire crews attended the scene.

Police said the fire was extinguished and the man was not injured.

However, he underwent a breath test and returned a positive reading of 0.294 — almost six times the legal blood-alcohol limit — they said.

They said the 32-year-old man from Parafield Gardens immediately lost his licence for 12 months, for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol.

He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
