Drunk chef threatened to 'smash' train worker after being refused Prosecco on Glasgow service

A drunk chef hurled abuse at a train worker after being refused bottles of Prosecco.

Ian Ward threatened to "smash" the on-board shop assistant during a Birmingham to Glasgow service last November.

The 29 year-old ended up being arrested and was hauled into the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He pleaded guilty to acting in a threatening or abusive manner.

Sheriff Valerie Mays ordered Ward to do 215 hours unpaid work and put him under supervision for 18 months.

The court heard Virgin train staff were aware of Ward downing whisky during the journey.

Ward later went to the shop carriage to buy small bottles of Prosecco.

But, he was refused service due to his "level of intoxication."

He claimed he was not buying it for himself before shouting and swearing.

Ward, now of Warrington, Cheshire, said: "I want a f***ing drink, serve me...I want to buy a drink."

He placed the bottles on the till desk but the assistant removed them and closed the shutters which further riled Ward.

Prosecutor Davidson Smith said: "He began shouting and threatening the staff member saying 'I am going to smash you'."

His lawyer told the court Ward, who works as a catering chef for TV shows and films, had ended up drunk following a gathering with friends the day before.

Sheriff Mays said: "People should be able to travel without having to put up with aggressive drunks and be threatened."
