Drunk and off the rails: Slips and falls prompt commuter safety warning

A spate of drunks behaving badly on Queensland Rail services has prompted a safety warning as the silly season continues.

The rail service provider has released CCTV footage showing a series of incidents where inebriated commuters slip, trip, or fall at train stations.

One clip is of a man who attempts to evade a fare at Fortitude Valley station in August.

He tries, and fails, to jump over fare gates a number of times, before making a break for it down the up-escalators from one of the platforms.

"The not quite escape artist's plan is thwarted by police, who meet him on the platform and issue him with a $247 fine," Queensland Rail CEO Nick Easy said.

"There is a humorous side to this but we take it very seriously. Our passengers are very important to us, we want them to have a good time and be safe on our rail network."

Another video clip shows a man sprinting through Sandgate station carrying what appears to be a six-pack of bag of beer.

He trips twice along the stairwell and spills his drinks along the path.

Queensland Rail statistics show 600 commuters slipped, tripped or fell on its rail network last financial year, with many of them believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

Central Station Acting Station Master Valerie said it is all too common.

"Unfortunately we do see this on a regular basis — people not taking care, people being stupid and it generally ends up with an injury which is not what anybody wants to see when they come to a train station," she said.

"If you think you have had too much to drink, maybe you should get in the lift and not go down the stairs and parents should keep an eye on their children."
