Drumpellier Cricket Club maintain challenge with win at Helensburgh

Drumpellier maintained third place in the Western District Cricket Union First Division with a two-wicket win over Helensburgh at Ardencaple on Saturday.

The match wasn’t without controversy, with Marc Christenson taking the stumps off with Nathan Allison out on the crease, which the Drumpellier player didn’t take kindly to, and which may result in a suspension.

However, the match sets up a clash with second-placed Calero Kelburne at Langloan on Saturday.

Burgh started quietly, but with Darren and Jordan Pryde in tandem they soon had the hosts 5-1 when Darren had RK Arachchi LBW for 1, and in the next over had Stuart Adams LBW for six at 11-2.

Two runs later, Christenson was caught by Mohsin Khan off the bowling of Jordan Pryde, and then lost two wickets in the same over for eight runs, leaving them at 24-5.

Ryan Webb and Cameron White put on 30 for the next wicket, when the latter was caught by Josh Allison off the bowling of Adeel Raza.

Josh Allison then had Ian Chambers LBW in the first bowl of his innings, then William Leslie bowled Stephen Niven for a duck.

Josh Allison had Josh Mathieson caught at leg wicket by Darren Pryde with Helensburgh 79 all out in 24.3 overs.

Drumpellier were set a target of 80 in 50 overs, but it didn’t start well for them when Nic Pyne chipped the ball to Caleb Alexander off the bowling of Duncan Stephens.

However, Fraser Hamilton and Jordan Pryde dug in and took 32 in the 10th over.

The game was halted by a 50-minute rain break, before Hamilton and Jordan Pryde took the total to 42, before the latter was smartly taken when the ball clipped his glove and was caught by wicket keeper Stuart Adams.

Drumpellier then only scored 10 runs in seven overs, before Allison’s controversial dismissal; though it is in the laws of the game, it’s often looked upon unfavourably.

The visitors were by that point on 54-3, needing 26 runs in 28 overs.

Drumpellier were 64-4 when Hamilton was bowled by Caelan Lang for 13, then lost Leslie, Stephen Allison, Josh Allison and Craig McDonald in five overs for 11 runs, leaving them at 77-8.

However, Raza smashed a four off Christenson’s bowling to give Drumpellier the win.
