Drumchapel boy death site 'accident waiting to happen' after parents reported safety fears

Parents who live near a building site in Drumchapel where a child has died reported concerns over safety of the site to police and management several times.

Residents say they had noticed local children were sneaking off to play on the site during lockdown.

Schoolboy Shea Ryan died after he fell down a hole, believed to be a drain, on the building site shortly before 10pm on Thursday night.

He was rushed to hospital but passed away soon after.

It is understood he was with a group of friends playing at the site when tragedy struck.

One local who lives near the site said: “Kids have been down most nights jumping about the diggers, despite the fact a security guard patrols the site.

“Parents would come out and shout for their kids to come in at night from the site.

“It’s been reported to police and Scottish Water several times over the last few weeks so there have been concerns for safety.

“It’s been a tragic accident waiting to happen.”

Work has been ongoing in the area near Kinfauns Drive as part of a £5million drainage project to help combat flooding with engineers also planning to realign Gardscadden Burn.

The site is being managed by Scottish Water.

One resident told the Daily Record how they heard a group of children screaming for help at the site.

They said: They said: "I saw the boy’s friends running for help after it happened.

"They were panicked, upset and screaming.

"There were about for or five of them.

"I saw it all unfold. The ambulance came and left about 11.30pm. It’s such a tragedy.”

Tributes have been paid to the 'caring' schoolboy.

One relative paid tribute to tragic young Shea and said he would be remembered as 'forever 10'.

They said: "Cant believe it absolutely devastated, never in my life did I think that my beautiful, kind caring wee cousin would be sent to heaven at this time of year and age.

"I'll love you forever wee guy, forever 10."

A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: “We are aware of an incident at a construction site in Drumchapel last night which has tragically resulted in a young boy losing his life.

“We, together with the other agencies working on this site, are assisting Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive with their investigations. All of our thoughts are with the boy who has lost his life, his family and friends.”
