Drumchapel councillor uses her own Christmas lights to spread festive cheer

Drumchapel residents have come together to spread Christmas cheer after their festive displays were axed.

Hundreds of locals have been left disappointed by the lack of Christmas decorations in the town.

A decision by Glasgow City Council to cut the city-wide festive lighting budget has meant that the area is without its usual displays.

Each Area Partnership has been given the same budget for a single Christmas display.

However, as the Drumchapel usually has seven displays, it's looking especially dull this year.

So much so Councillor Elspeth Kerr has used decorations from her own home to light up some of the town's trees.

Speaking to Glasgow Live, she said: "Naturally I'm devastated that there's no tree at Drumchapel Shopping Centre as there has been for the past two years and never was anything mentioned about the lights over the road outside the Shopping Centre or in the other places round Drumchapel or the Trees in the park and opposite Drumchapel Community Centre.

"I'm really angry that such a thing could happen especially this year after all the hardship of 2020.

"With that in mind I needed to do something to brighten things up even a little so I took the lights I had in my windows of my house that were battery operated and took them down and put them round two trees.

"Local children and families have started putting lights up too."

Following pressure from all three of Drumchapel's local councillors, the council has agreed to light up three trees in the local park and  at the top of Garscadden Road and Drumchapel Road.

Councillor Kerr added: "This amazing community is going to come together to brighten up our wee area of Glasgow which is amazing but still sad as we shouldn’t be having to do any of this."
