Drugs warning issued to 10,000 revellers at Elrow Town Edinburgh festival

A drugs warning has been issued by police to 10,000 revellers heading to a dance music event today.

The all-day Elrow Town Edinburgh festival is being held at the Royal Highland Centre Showground in Ingliston, near the capital.

Festival-goers were warned a zero-tolerance approach would be taken on anyone trying to sneak in drugs or weapons.

Searches will be carried out by stewards and police sniffer dogs on people entering the venue, and anyone smuggling illicit items faces arrest.

Music fans trying to bring in alcohol also risk being turned away at the door.

The line-up includes performances by acts including Basement Jaxx, CamelPhat and more than 20 DJs.

The event’s organisers are renowned for putting on festivals worldwide featuring inflatables, huge puppets, stilt walkers and flamboyant stage sets.

Superintendent Jordana Emerson, the event commander, said: “Please remember that you will be subject to a search before entering the venue and if you are found to have any prohibited items such as drugs, alcohol or weapons on your person, you may not be permitted entry and could face further police action.

"You won’t be getting in and may face having a criminal record.

“We have detection search dogs supporting the operation who have very keen noses.”

Earlier this month, police arrested 44 people at TRNSMT festival at Glasgow Green.
