Drugs scandal at Scots jail as ‘20 inmates rushed to hospital’ after overdosing behind bars

More than a dozen inmates were reportedly rushed to hospital after overdosing on smuggled drugs at a Scots jail.

A source claims that around 20 prisoners from one hall fell ill at HMP Addiewell, West Lothian, on Thursday after consuming illicit substances while behind bars.

It is not currently known what drug was involved however the latest incident comes just days after a prison union boss issued a warning about psychoactive substances.

The Prison Officers’ Association (POA) called for urgent action on tackling the use of deadly substances, such as ‘zombie spice’, which is flooding into the jail estate.

We previously told how six overdoses were reported in one weekend at Scotland’s maximum security jail, HMP Shotts.

Sodexo Justice Services, who run Addiewell on behalf of the Scottish Prison Service, confirmed there had been an incident at the jail.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a number of prisoners were taken to hospital for medical attention.”

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
