Drugs farm found yards from shooting as forensics comb scene

Police busted a drugs farm yards away from the scene of a shooting.

Patrols were stepped up in Litherland after the second post-Christmas gun blast within a mile on Tuesday.

They discovered a cannabis farm in a home on Anderson Road - the street next to the latest shooting scene.

Around 50 plants were recovered by Merseyside Police's cannabis dismantling team, called to an address initially attended by officers at 10.55am on Wednesday.

Specialist equipment was also seized, though no-one was found at the property.

The discovery unfolded just yards away from Tuesday night's shooting on Harrington Road.

Three shots were heard by residents. No-one was injured in the attack, which took place around 10.30pm. Police found bullet casings in the street.

The incident led to a Section 60 Order being enforced in the area due to concerns about the potential for further trouble.

The order, which concluded yesterday, allowed greater stop and search powers to officers in the area.

Just two days earlier there had been a shooting at nearby Thackeray Gardens in Bootle.

That attack saw a gunman fire at three men on a balcony, though none were hit.

Offering reassurance earlier this week, Sefton Community Chief Inspector Mike O’Malley said: “We share the community’s concern at two recent firearms incidents in the area, and this is one of a number of measures we are taking to disrupt those who would consider bringing weapons onto our streets.

“Enquiries into both incidents continue and we are determined to establish exactly what happened and bring all those responsible to justice. Anyone prepared to endanger the lives of other people by carrying and firing a weapon in the heart of our communities is not welcome in Merseyside.

“This Section 60 Order has been introduced to give us more power to stop people in an effort to prevent any further violence, and we welcome any information that local residents can provide on where weapons are being stored, carried or used. Be assured we will take action on all you tell us.

“We regularly patrol Litherland and the surrounding areas, and I hope the people who live there will welcome the fact they see our officers out in force in the coming days, both in uniform and plain clothes."

Anyone with information on either shooting can call Merseyside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
