A drugs courier ran across the M62 to avoid being caught, only to be found hours later trying to book into a hotel.
Royn Duhausse, 24, was stopped by police in a Seat on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway, at junction 25 near Huddersfield.
As he was handcuffed, Duhausse was able to evade the police and ran across the other side of the carriageway, in the early evening on June 24.
Police discovered two-and-a-half kilos of cannabis in the boot of the car, which had been driven by a woman.
She was held but wasn't prosecuted, after Duhausse told officers she had no knowledge of the drugs.
Hours later, Duhausse was found by police in Brighouse, west Yorkshire, trying to book into a Holiday Inn.
He gave officers a false name, but when they took his fingerprints his true identity was revealed.
After being arrested, Duhausse told police that he had been on his way to Leeds.
He said he ran from police, because of the drugs, but also because he knew he wasn't supposed to be in the UK.
Duhausse is French, and came into the UK with his mother as a child, prosecutor Patrick Williamson said.
He was deported after receiving a six year sentence for robbery in 2011.
After being released, he was ordered to work with the youth offending team.
But then Home Secretary Theresa May signed an order deporting Duhausse to France after he failed to engage with them.
He later got back into the UK on the back of a lorry, and was again sent to France in March 2018.
Manchester Crown Court heard that Duhausse had again returned to the UK at some point prior to the incident last month.
Defending, Patrick Buckley said Duhausse's life is in England, but accepts he has to go through the proper channels to try and return to this country legitimately.
He said Duhausse would receive a 'nominal' amount of about £100 for acting as a courier for the drugs.
Mr Buckley said Duhausse's decision to run across the M62 could have 'catastrophic consequences'.
"Running across the M62 wasn't perhaps the best decision he has ever made, but thank goodness he is okay," the lawyer said.
Sentencing, Judge Richard Mansell QC told the defendant: "It does seem pretty clear that you must have been acting as a courier, to receive a reward of payment in cash, probably not a lot of money but enough to get by at least, because you were certainly not in a position to earn any money legitimately."
Duhausse, of no fixed address, was jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply cannabis, entering the UK in breach of a deportation order, and obstructing a constable.
