Drugged up driver crashed into parked car

A man who crashed into a parked car while he was high was disqualified for two years, writes Edwin Lawrence.

And Jason Aitken, 42, must resit the driving test before he gets back behind the wheel.

Aitken admitted driving while unfit through drink or drugs when he appeared at Ayr Sheriff Court.

He also admitted careless driving and colliding with a stationary vehicle, as well as failing to stop after an accident.

Depute fiscal Catherine White said Aitken was captured on CCTV reversing his car into another in Logan Avenue, Logan, Cumnock, around 5.35pm on December 21.

Aitken, of nearby Boswell Crescent, drove away and police were contacted.

They went to his house and “found him to be argumentative and volatile,” said the depute fiscal.

“His speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed.

“His partner was asked if she had been in the car and replied: ‘It wasn’t me. I was sleeping’.

“Mr Aitken then said: ‘It must have been me then.’”

A doctor was called and Aitken was found to have cannabinoids in his system.

Defence lawyer Derek Pettigrew spoke of a major life-changing event for Aitken when he was stabbed and had his spleen removed.

He said Aitken had not driven for a long period of time under the influence of drugs.

And Mr Pettigrew said the stabbing and surgery meant Aitken was not fit to do unpaid work as a punishment.

“Since he was stabbed he has been living like a hermit.” the lawyer said. “He lives alone on benefits.”

Sheriff Desmond Leslie banned Aitken for two years and ordered him to be tagged for three months.

The order means Aitken has to be at home between 7pm and 7am.
