Drug warning as people fall ill after taking 'bad batch' of pills

A warning has gone out after people fell ill after taking a ‘bad batch’ of ‘illegal drugs’.

A number of people were taken to hospital last night after overdosing on what is believed to be miss-sold Valium and Xanax.

Swansea Bay University Health Board issued a statement on social media warning everyone about the dangers that come with taking drugs.

The casualties were taken to the Emergency Department at Morriston Hospital in Swansea on Wednesday, July 7 in what’s being described as a 'serious condition'.

Valium or Diazepam is commonly used to treat conditions including anxiety, seizures and alcohol withdrawal. It can also be used to treat muscle spasms and provide sedation before medical procedures.

Xanax can be used to treat anxiety in the short-term. It increases brain chemicals which promote calmness and produce a relaxing feeling. It can also help with panic disorders.

The health board's warning said: "Warning: A number of people are seriously ill in Morriston Hospital after overdosing on what is believed to be a bad batch of illegal recreational drugs possibly being mis-sold as Valium and Xanax.

"The casualties were taken to the hospital’s Emergency Department today, Wednesday 7th July in a serious condition. People are being warned of the dangers of taking these drugs."
