Drug-using thug brutally assaulted partner and her friend after night out

A drug-using thug left his partner and her friend terrified after a violent assault on them after a night out.

Ian Conway, 27, was under the influence of drugs when he attacked his now ex-girlfriend and her pal in Coatbridge in April.

Conway, who lives in Shettleston, throttled his then lover and dragged her to the ground by her hair.

He also acted violently towards her friend who bravely intervened during the chaotic scenes on Muiryhall Street to come to her friend’s aid.

The procurator fiscal said: “They had been in a relationship for seven months, but it ended due to this incident.

“The first complainer had been out socialising and upon returning home at around 3.15am, the accused grabbed her hair and pulled her to the ground.

“He put his hands around her throat and a struggle ensued. The second complainer got the accused off her and he then turned his attention to her.

“He grabbed her hair and pulled out her extensions. She ran out to seek help and left the accused inside.

“Police arrived shortly after they called and they observed the two complainers crying.

“The accused was arrested and replied, ‘she’s getting done’.”

Conway’s defence solicitor said: “He’s in full-time employment as a credit account manager.

“He had been on a separate night out on the night in question. He accepts full responsibility and doesn’t seek reconciliation with the complainers.

“This was completely out of character for him as he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

“He has gone on to seek help from addiction counselling. He’s in position to comply with a community payback order.”

Sheriff Liam Murphy said: “I note this is your first conviction and you’ve shown a good deal of remorse for your actions.

“This must have been very scary for the girls. I’ll place you on supervision for 12 months and you have to comply with court instructions.

“You’ll also do 120 hours of unpaid work, which is reduced from 140 due to your plea of guilt.

“If you fail to comply with this I can sentence you to prison.”
