Drug user clocks up 135th crime - after going straight for two years

A drug user managed to go straight for two years but then clocked up his 135th crime.

John Woodcock, 38, reached the total by twice stealing from the Co-op in the Bridgeway Centre in The Meadows, a court heard.

Fines totalling £160 with £82 costs were ordered from Woodcock, who is currently using a church as a night shelter.

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, told the court that Woodcock's record contained 133 offences, including 48 of dishonesty. But the last was dated 2017.

"He is a drug addict using £90 of mixed substances a day. The issue is the £90-a-day drug habit," added Mr Jerath.

Serena Cousin, mitigating at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on January 7, said: "Historically he is a prolific offender which is typical for someone with a drugs problem.

"What is not typical is the significant gap in offending. He tries to manage his drug habit.

"These offences were in October and it was a blip. There has been no offending since then.

"And for a large amount of that time, he has been street homeless."

Miss Cousin said that Woodcock twice took washing-up tablets from the shop.

He admitted two counts of theft and was told the court penalty would be deducted from his state benefits.
