Drug peddler, two cops hurt in Karimganj raid

SILCHAR: A drug peddler was injured by the police in Assam’s Karimganj on Saturday evening after he attacked the cops when they raided a village in Karimganj’s Patharkandi locality. Two policemen were also injured in the incident.

According to superintendent of police (Karimganj) Padmanabha Baruah, during the raid, five peddlers attacked the cops and tried to snatch their weapons. While police opened fire, four of them managed to escape but one was injured. The injured peddler was identified as Kawsar Ahmed, a resident of Banglatilla locality in Patharkandi block of Karimganj district. Kawsar as well as the two injured policemen have been admitted into Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

“Police were compelled to open fire when the miscreants tried to snatch the revolvers of the policemen”, said Baruah. Police sources said that 72 grams of suspected drug was recovered from the possession of Ahmed and further investigation is on. The second BJP government, led by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, launched a crusade against drugs. Sarma on July 18 burnt and had driven a bulldozer on drugs worth Rs 170 crore.
