NAN: A manhunt is under way for a drug inmate who escaped after being taken to a hospital for treatment on Saturday morning.

Rung Sae Zong, 22, ran out of Nan Hospital in Muang district at around 10.30am after being taken from Khao Noi prison for drug rehabilitation treatment, said police.

When he arrived at the hospital, the inmate suddenly lay down on the floor and acted as if he was suffering from acute stomach pain. He pretended to writhe in pain and, after seeing prison wardens looking around to get help for him, he immediately ran away.

The inmate fled towards a bridge opposite the hospital, heading towards Phu Phiang district, said police. Teams of officers from Muang and Phu Phiang districts were dispatched to hunt him down. So far, they have found no trace.

Police have contacted relatives of the inmate to help persuade him to surrender if he goes to any of their homes.
