Drug haul: Punjab and Haryana HC to decide today on issues to be heard on priority

CHANDIGARH:The Punjab and Haryana high court would on Thursday decide on the issues that would be heard on priority in relation to the Punjab’s drug haul case.

When the matter came up for hearing before the HC on Wednesday, Punjab advocate general (AG) A P S Deol, senior advocate Anupam Gupta and the counsel appearing for an NGO, Lawyers for Human Rights International (LHRI), Navkiran Singh requested the bench to open the investigation reports related to the drugs issue of the Punjab police and the enforcement directorate (ED) that are in sealed covers.

As the hearing of the case has been advanced by the HC, advocate Navkiran Singh also submitted a synopsis of the case highlighting 13 issues related to the case. The synopsis summoned the entire proceedings of the case that has taken place before the HC since it took cognizance of the matter in 2013.

As the case was listed at the end of Wednesday before a division bench headed by Justice A G Masih, the bench adjourned the hearing for Thursday. On October 8, the HC had ordered to prepone the hearing of the case from November 15 to October 13.

The matter relates to the Punjab drug menace and had reached the high court through the petition that Mohali resident Tarlochan Singh had filed in 2013, highlighting the sale of intoxicants in Ropar Jail in connivance with the jail staff. The high court told the Punjab government to explain.
