Drug-fuelled scrap worker who drove car into former mate is jailed

Bad blood between two scrap workers led to bizarre events on a Bishopworth Business Park.

Darren James fell out with Davit Donghuzashvil after Mr Donghuzashvil left their breaker's yard and set up his own yard close by.

A judge at Bristol Crown Court was shown CCTV footage capturing how the row escalated to a drug-addled James donning a dark wig and driving a car towards Mr Donghuzashvil on Cater Road.

Two days later James trundled around to Mr Donghuzashvil's premises on a forklift truck, brandishing a machete.

James then ran off but returned in a car and drove into Mr Donghuzashvil, injuring his leg, and smashed into his Mercedes car.

But he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on October 31 last year.

He also admitted possessing a machete, dangerous driving and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on November 2 last year and asked to be sentenced without delay.

Judge Euan Ambrose jailed him for three-and-a-half years.

He told James: "You have limited education, you cannot read or write and you have been taking drugs since you were a teenager, including Class A and spice.

"At the time you were taking a lot of drugs.

"It is said your judgement was clouded by drugs at the time of the offences."

James was ordered to have no contact with Mr Donghuzashvil and stay away from his yard for ten years.

His machete was confiscated and he was banned from driving for four years and three months and ordered to pass an extended driving test before returning to the road.

Ian Fenny, prosecuting, said wig-wearing James drove a VW Golf at Mr Donghuzashvil but made no contact with him.

Two days later, after driving to his yard on a forklift truck with a machete, he jumped into a Vauxhall Zafira and drove into him before writing off Mr Donghuzashvil's Mercedes.

Mr Donghuzashvil made a statement saying he suffered pain to his lower left leg, lost weight and felt scared after the incident.

He also stated how he had lost money and though he wanted to move on with his life lacked motivation and felt powerless.

Simon Cooper, defending, said his Bristol-born client left school without qualifications aged 14, lived on his own and started using drugs.

Mr Cooper said: "At the time of the incident he was taking heroin, crack cocaine, spice and cannabis.

"At the time he was using a £100-a-day cocktail of drugs.

"All his offending has related to drugs."
