Drug-fuelled driver ploughed into parked car after blacking out at wheel

A driver high on drugs blacked out at the wheel and ploughed into a parked car after mounting a verge.

Duncan Campbell, 42, was on Valium when he drove his Ford Mondeo dangerously through Paisley.

The town’s sheriff court heard he lost consciousness at a roundabout in Ferguslie Park Avenue and veered off the road, mounted a verge and then slammed into a BMW X5 parked in Candren Road.

Campbell, a Glasgow Airport baggage handler, gave a negative breath test to officers and was then arrested and taken to Greenock police station.

Prosecutor Megan Glancy said Campbell told officers: “I am really sorry. I just blacked out.”

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving by failing to keep proper control of his car, mounting a verge, and colliding with a parked vehicle while under the influence of drugs on October 20 last year.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew said he had considered a prison term but instead ordered Campbell to do 280 hours of unpaid work and banned him from driving for 22 months.
