Drug driver who went to Wales for lockdown haircut caught doing 122mph on M5

Driving at speeds of 122mph after heading to Wales for a haircut during the second lockdown has landed a driver with a disqualification and a fine.

Robert White, 30, from Taunton, was also found to be driving under the influence of drugs when he was stopped by police on the M5 in Somerset on March 17 this year.

White admitted the charges at a previous hearing and was sentenced at Taunton Deane Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 2 December, said Avon and Somerset Police

He has been banned from driving for 32 months and, at Taunton Magistrates’ Court, was fined £120 and ordered to pay £75 in court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

He was, at the time, given a fixed penalty notice – while travelling back after having a haircut – for breach of Covid-19 regulations as the second national lockdown was in place in England, reported Somerset Live.

Pc Owen Davies, of the roads policing unit, said: “White’s driving on that day was reckless in the extreme. Not only was he driving at 122mph in a 70mph zone, but he was also under the influence of drugs at the time.

“If he’d been involved in a collision while driving at that speed, it would have resulted in catastrophic consequences.”

The Welsh government allowed hairdressers to reopen on March 15, 2021, just two days before the speeder was caught, while those in England remained closed until Monday, April 12..
