Drug-driver sped off in BMW when he spotted police doing roadside drink tests after Christmas

A drug-driver sped up to 90mph in a police chase after he was spotted trying to avoid drink-driving checks in Barry days after Christmas.

Jordan Karnicki, 21, was caught on dashcam footage speeding through the streets of the town in a grey BMW on December 27 last year while over the legal limit for cannabis.

He deliberately tried to evade capture by making sharp turns and driving on the wrong side of the road while his partner was in the passenger seat. When Karnicki eventually stopped he was found in possession of cannabis and was found to be over the specified drug limit.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday heard drink-driving checks were being conducted by police in Port Road East, Barry, when the defendant was seen leaving Wenvoe Castle Golf Club before quickly changing direction and speeding off.

Prosecutor Thomas Stanway said an officer decided to follow Karnicki as they believed he was attempting to evade the checks.

The court heard the officer had to drive at 100mph to catch up with the defendant who took a number of sharp turns into Meggitt Road and then Hinchcliffe Avenue.

The officer put his blue lights on but Karnicki continued driving at speed through Burrough Avenue, Charter Avenue, Winston Road and Colcot Road where the defendant accelerated to 90mph in a 30mph zone.

Mr Stanway added: "The defendant's BMW passed members of the public and swerved onto and off the opposite carriagway. He then turned the lights off on the vehicle in an attempt to evade the officer.

"As he approached the roundabout at Barry Road at 60mph he swerved onto the other side of the road past a keep left sign as another vehicle travelled in the opposite direction."

Karnicki increased his speed to 65mph as he entered Jenner Road but he then put on his hazard lights and stuck his hand out of the window to signal to officers he was stopping.

The defendant was arrested having travelled three miles from when he was first spotted by police.

A sample of his saliva was taken which tested positive for cannabis and later analysis of his blood found 2.3mg of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol per litre of blood. Police also found a small bag of cannabis and a grinder in the defendant's car.

Having given a no comment interview Karnicki, of Greenacres, Barry, later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving while over the specified drug limit, and possession of cannabis.

He has previous convictions for taking a vehicle without the owner's consent and GBH for which he received a suspended prison sentence.

The defendant told a probation officer he had been out with his partner on the night of the offence and had consumed an amount of cannabis before heading home but panicked after seeing the drink-driving checks.

Defence barrister Aled Watkins said no injury or damage had been caused as a result of Karnicki's driving and he stopped of his own volition after realising the futility of his escape.

Sentencing, Recorder Paul Hopkins QC said: "The facts of this case make for disturbing reading."

Karnicki was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment and was disqualified from driving for two years and five months.
