Drug dealer caught in barbers ordered to pay back £2,800 after making £10,000

A drug dealer who was stopped by police in a barber shop has been ordered to pay back just £2,800 despite making more than £10,000. He was found in possession of cocaine and cannabis when searched.

Liam Dalton, 28, was seen by an officer riding an illegal electric bike in Newport on July 28, 2022, at 1.40pm. He later entered a barbers but left bike outside, which drew the attention of the police.

He walked out and and tried to run away but was detained and searched. The defendant was carrying a black Tommy Jeans bag and a metal tin was found in his pocket. The tin contained 10 individual bags containing white powder while the bag contained cannabis and cash.

Dalton was arrested and analysis of the items was carried out. In total there was 7.35g of cocaine and 68g of cannabis, with a combined street value between £1,180 and £1,290. The total amount of cash found came to £360.

The defendant of Hendre Farm Drive, Newport, later pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply controlled drugs of class A and class B. He was serving an eight-week suspended sentence for burglary. He was sentenced to 40 months imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court in September last year.

A Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) hearing on Friday heard Dalton had benefited to the tune of £10,422, but only had available assets worth £2,860. Judge Jeremy Jenkins ordered for that sum to be paid within 28 days or serve an additional seven days imprisonment in default.
