Drug addict broke into Leeds city centre restaurant during lockdown

A drug addict broke into a Leeds city centre restaurant during lockdown and stole booze.

Aaron McGough was on drugs when he broke into Miah's Kitchen on York Place at around 9pm on April 27 this year.

The 38-year-old was jailed for 10 months today (Monday) after pleading guilty to burglary, two counts of possession of class A drugs and one count of possession of a class B drug.

Leeds Crown Court heard McGough cycled around the restaurant a couple of times before smashing a window.

He went inside, stole wine and spirits and left.

His blood was later found at the scene.

Prosecutor Katy Varlow said McGough was arrested and admitted the offence in his police interview, saying he had done it was he was homeless.

She said the value of the stolen alcohol was unknown.

In a separate incident on April 3 this year, officers had spotted McGough acting suspiciously in the Lower Wortley area of the city.

He threw away a bag which was found to contain two wraps of crack cocaine, three wraps of heroin and three wraps of Spice.

McGough, of Shafton View, Holbeck, Leeds, has 89 previous convictions for 141 offences, 69 of which are offences of dishonesty.

Maryam Ahmad, mitigating, said her client is a drug addict who has no recollection of committing the burglary as he was under the influence at the time.

She said he apologises to the owner of the restaurant.
