Droylsden football club resign from Northern Premier League due to financial strain of Covid-19 pandemic

Droylsden football club have resigned from the Northern Premier League due the financial strain of the coronavirus pandemic.

Announcing the decision in a statement, The Division One team said they will also not take part in any cup competitions this season.

Club manager, Dave Pace, described the decision to resign from the league, as the 'most difficult' he had ever had to make.

In a letter addressed to the Northern Premier League Chairman, Mr Pace said the disruption caused by Covid-19 had left him with no alternative but to suspend play.

The club, nicknamed 'The Bloods' was founded in 1982 and holds 5,000 fans at the Butcher's Arms Ground in Droylsden.

But due to lockdown restrictions imposed in March, the ground has not been able to welcome fans for several months.

The club was forced to close its social club and functions rooms since the start of the pandemic, leaving them with little income source.

Mr Pace said this, coupled with the loss of money from the club's main sponsor, has meant the club has received no alternative income during the crisis.

"The club may hopefully survive this crisis and continue into the future in less challenging circumstances than we find ourselves in during the present," he said.

Deputy Labour leader and MP for Ashton under Lyne, Angela Rayner described the news as 'absolutely devastating.'

She wrote on Twitter: "Absolutely devastating news from my local football club @Droylsden_FC a real community football club that has felt the full impact of #COVID19 on its finances.

"I sincerely hope that the bloods founded in 1892 will return once again in the near future."

A gofundme page titled 'Save Droylsden FC' was set up by fans moments after the news was announced by the club.

Fans and rival supporters took to social media to express their shock at the announcement.

One person wrote: "It's really tough to see Droylsden FC unable to start the campaign next season. We can only hope that you bounce back."

Another wrote: "Sad news. A great club who always made us feel really welcome when we visited them."

Former sports journalist, Andy Rudkin said: "Had some great times watching @Droylsden_FC in the past, esp covering the heady FA Cup matches as a journo and when in the Conference.

"Most importantly the affinity that my dad played for them for years and going to the Butchers Arms as a child."
