The terrifying moment a young girl was drowning before being saved by four quick-on-their-feet people has been captured on camera. A video shown by BBC Look North shows the harrowing moment the girl was struggling against a rough sea in the seaside town of Bridlington.
But thanks to four heroes, who threw a lifebelt towards her as she tried to swim to shore, the girl's life was saved. One man can be seen in the clip diving into the waters himself as waves crashed up to help recover her and assist her up the slipway, reports HullLive.
The girl is consoled as she is returned to safety but begins to cry loudly after the near-death experience. Rescuers were nearly knocked off their feet by the ferocity of the waves as the Coastguard responded to the incident after the girl was safe.
The incident occurred on Sunday, May 7 in the seaside town as it was busy for the Bank Holiday Weekend. Thankfully, the life ring used was situated on the harbour wall.
The video was posted to Facebook by Ksenia Wright, who said: "My dad's a hero - saved a girl today." And the community were heaping praise on those who risked their lives to save the girl.
Writing on Facebook, Keely Campbell said: "I witnessed this and it's something I never wish to witness again. At one point I saw her disappear and thought she'd gone. If it wasn't for these saviours actions there would have been a catastrophic ending. Well done, all of you."
David Smith added: "A happy ending when things could have been so different. Saddest part when the girl realises she's just escaped death. Rescuers are what you call proper heroes."
Jordan Grebby, of the Bridlington Coastguard, told the Bridlington Echo newspaper: “There is no doubt that members of the public have saved this individual's life after they got into difficulty just off the Bridlington Harbour. This incident is a timely reminder that whilst the sea can look fun, it can also be very dangerous.
"It’s important to use a lifeguarded beach to swim, however if you do get into difficulty, stay calm, attempt to #FloatToLive and try and get someone’s attention. If you happen to see someone who is in difficulty dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
