Drops prompt Panthers DBs to stay late at practice working on catches

Aside from Cam Newton’s shoulder, the single biggest x-factor for the Panthers’ success in 2019 may be how well their secondary performs.

Last season, the unit was by far the weakest link on Carolina’s roster and their failures played a major role in several losses – most notably the brutal loss to the Seahawks at home in Week 12 that hurt their playoff hopes more than any other game.

On paper, the Panthers’ defensive backfield looks deeper and more well-rounded now than last year. The late addition of Tre Boston in particular was a key pickup, filling a gaping hole at free safety. They’re still trying to figure out who will play the small nickel role, but for the most part the pieces are set and it’s time to execute.

Today was not a banner day at practice for this group.

With Mike Adams out of the picture, safety Eric Reid has become the secondary’s new elder statesman. He was displeased enough to chastise his teammates from the sidelines after several dropped picks.

The Panthers DBs know this is a critical area. Forcing turnovers has been the missing piece of the puzzle for this unit ever since the end of the 2015 season, when Carolina’s defense peaked and led the league in interceptions.

So, they stayed late after practice today and worked on catching the ball.

Donte Jackson led the team with four interceptions last season. The Panthers need the other DBs to pick up the slack and make more plays on the ball.
