Drop-in vaccine clinics to open across Scotland amid fears vaccination programme is 'stalling'

Walk-in centres are to finally open across Scotland amid fears the vaccination programme is "stalling".

The latest daily figures show that the rolling weekly vaccination rate plummeted by a more than third during June, resulting in more than 130,000 fewer people per week getting a vaccine dose.

All mainland health boards will offer drop-in clinics from Monday as the programme nears completion of f irst doses for all adults in Scotland.

Everyone aged 18 and over can attend for their first dose or – if eight weeks have passed - their second dose. Separate queues will be in operation for those with a scheduled appointment.

From Monday, mobile vaccination units run by the Scottish Ambulance Service will visit local communities and busy city centre spots in Edinburgh and Glasgow for a two week period.

Scottish Labour has criticised the delay in opening walk-in vaccination centres, with the current system of mailed appointment letters leading to thousands being sent to wrong addresses.

The party's health spokeswoman, Jackie Baillie, said that in England the use of walk-in clinics open to all adults has helped boost vaccine coverage particularly among young people.

But so far in Scotland only NHS Lothian has opened one - despite the vaccine being available to younger demographics for months now.

Baillie said: “We are seeing more and more proof of the SNP’s botched handling of the current wave of the pandemic. At the very time we need to be ramping up vaccination, it is beginning to stall.

“The vaccine, along with test and protect, is our ticket back to normality – but on both counts the SNP have dropped the ball.

“With cases climbing by the day, we need to be vaccinating as quickly as supplies allow.

“The SNP have been dragging their feet for too long on walk-in vaccination centres. Setting up walk-in clinics for all adults all over the country needs to be a top priority.”

Health secretary Humza Yousaf said: “Our route out of this pandemic is getting as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, that is why I am urging people to get jagged in July.

“The vaccination programme continues to progress at pace and, as always, I want to thank everyone involved and all those who have taken up the offer of vaccine.

“As we approach the final stages of the first COVID-19 vaccination programme we are increasing the options available for how and when you choose to be inoculated.

“You can attend one of the drop-in clinics being run in all mainland health boards or pop into a mobile unit. You can also rearrange the location of your appointment online if, for example, it is more convenient for you to be vaccinated closer to your work than home.

“You can find out where your nearest drop-in clinics are by visiting NHS Inform which will direct you to the latest information from your local health board.

“All those aged 18 and over can also self-register to receive their appointment by text or email which will be convenient for anyone who has recently moved house or is new to Scotland.
