Reports have emerged that drones were flying near Newcastle Airport and the Williamtown air force base earlier this month.
The Daily Telegraph revealed that "multiple confirmed" uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) reportedly breached restricted airspace between July 11 and 13.
The publication reported that the Australian Defence Force (ADF) did not know who was operating the drones or why, but had issued reports to the NSW Police Counter-UAS Unit.
A Defence spokesperson remained tight-lipped about the details in a statement on Monday, August 10.
"Defence is aware of reports of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) operating in the vicinity of Newcastle Airport and RAAF Base Williamtown," they said.
"Defence employs robust, layered security measures to protect its personnel, establishments and capability.
"For operational security reasons, Defence does not comment on specific arrangements or measures in place at its establishments."

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base at Williamtown, 30 kilometres north of Newcastle, is Australia's premier fighter pilot training base and houses most of the F-35A joint strike fighter jets.
Newcastle Airport operates from the RAAF base under a lease.
Separately, Defence has issued a noise alert for an F-35A Lightning II aircraft which will be conducting an aerobatic display practice at Williamtown.
Flares will be released between 2.30pm and 3pm but the public should not be alarmed.
