Drones used to battle Bangkok smog after pollution forces schools to close

Drones are being used to battle smog in Bangkok after pollution forced 437 schools in the city to close for the week.

Authorities are using the remote controlled aircraft, trucks and even small planes to spray water around the city in an attempt to improve the air quality.

Governor Asawin Kwanmuang acknowledged that drones are not a long-term solution but said he thinks any effort is worthwhile.

He said critics would otherwise criticise him for doing nothing if he did not try new ideas and said: "Those who are knowledgeable on this issue, don't give opinions to others, tell me."

The drones are being flown in an attempt to clear the air of dangerous particles

He invited private-sector experts and academics to share the ideas to rectify the issue.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha directed Bangkok's governor to order the school closures after officials said the dangerous levels would continue until at least Monday.

The drones have water tanks attached to them so they can spray the air as they fly

"We decided to eliminate the problem by closing down the schools," said Governor Asawin. "We're afraid that it can be dangerous for the children."

He has since declared the city a "pollution control zone" allowing measures such as road closures to be put in place.

The measures proposed this week would focus on what are generally considered the main sources of Bangkok's air pollution, particularly vehicle exhaust fumes.

Open burning and emissions from factories and power plants also are major contributing factors as is dust from construction sites.

In Bangkok the crisis-level pollution along with public awareness has been somewhat developed by meteorological events that have trapped noxious pollution.

These include a thermal inversion which keeps the dangerous particles closer to the ground

There have also been weak winds which in turn fail to blow them away.
