OSAKA -- A practical experiment for a flying car service, to be put into use at the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, was conducted Friday at Osaka's Nanko waterfront district using a testing drone.
The two-day test, until Saturday, involves workers flying a large unmanned drone, which is designed to carry parcels, over the water to collect and analyze data on wind effects and battery consumption.
Five companies, including Tokyo-based flying car developer SkyDrive Inc., Kansai Electric Power Co. and Kintetsu Group Holdings Co., together conducted the test.
At around 10 a.m. Friday, the drone, measuring 1.2 meters long, 1.8 meters wide and 1 meter tall, took off from the Central Pier of the Port of Osaka in Minato Ward, overlooking the Expo site of Yumeshima in Konohana Ward. The aircraft flew to an altitude of 20 meters on autopilot and traveled to and from a point 50 meters offshore in a flight of about 5 minutes.
SkyDrive plans for a two-seat flying car to traverse a 5-kilometer route between Yumeshima and the Tempozan area, which is near the test site, during the Expo.
