Drone footage shows scale of devastating flooding at homes as river bursts banks

Shocking aerial footage shows the devastating scale of flooding after a river in Scotland burst its banks, amid warnings of five days of downpours across Britain.

Distraught householders are counting the cost after water overflowed from the River Nith in Dumfries.

It happened at around 1pm yesterday, with emergency services issuing a stark warning to people living nearby.

A local captured shocking scenes from the sky as water poured out of the river and into surrounding streets, the Daily Record reports.

John Blandford shared the drone footage online, which showed fast-moving water close to submerging some trees.

The four-minute clip reveals the extent of the flooding, with a number of homes and businesses affected by heavy rainfall.

The Whitesands area, which is shown in the video, has been closed off by emergency services.

Locals were warned not to enter Shakespeare Street and Irish Street. Further road closures were later put in place, on the A709, A712 and A713.

The B725 was also completely blocked after a landslide as heavy rain continued to batter the country.

Police added: "There's reports of extreme surface water on A75 throughout D&G.

"Please avoid the areas & find alternative routes if having to travel. Allow extra travel time & reduce your speed incase of lying surface water."

It comes as the Met Office issued a 'danger to life' amber warning which will last until midnight on Thursday with South West Scotland to be hit worst.

Emergency services in Hawick have now declared a major incident due to flooding in the Borders town.

Across the UK, Brits look set for five more days of torrential rain following downpours.

The Met Office said there has been 370mm of rain recorded at Honister Pass in Cumbria between 1am on Wednesday and 6pm on Thursday.

It reported 132mm of rain at Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway in the same period.

And there are currently 65 flood warnings and alerts in England and a further 21 in Scotland.

The Met Office is predicting persistent and heavy rain on Friday which could become drier by the afternoon with a risk still of heavy showers.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern also warned another weather system will quickly approach the UK on Saturday, pushed though by an Atlantic jetstream.

He said: "It's not long before another system turns up, carried along by the jetstream.

"You can see two streams with this jet stream, one of them engaging some warm air towards the Iberian peninsula and developing some wet weather systems there and another pushing systems through to the UK.
