Drone flying near Glasgow Airport comes within 100ft of plane prompting police response

Passengers arriving into Glasgow Airport had a lucky escape after a drone flew within 100 feet of a plane as it was coming in to land.

The incident happened late on Saturday evening (Jul 24) as the plane flew over the Lochwinnoch area of Renfrewshire around 10 miles south west of the airport.

After observing the drone from the cockpit, the pilot altered staff at the airport who then contacted police about the incident.

Officers were then dispatched to the local area to try and trace the owner of the drone, but were unsuccessful, Renfrewshire Live reports.

The alarming incident has prompted police to issue a warning to drone users about the dangers of flying such devices close to airports.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "On Saturday we received a report from staff at Glasgow Airport stating that an airline pilot had observed a drone flying in close proximity to his aircraft as he passed over the Lochwinnoch area.

"“It goes without saying that drones can, and do present a very real hazard to aircraft and all due diligence must be given when flying Unmanned Ariel Vehicles. Anyone found to be flying a drone or similar in a reckless or negligent manner will be dealt with robustly.”

Meanwhile in the wake of the in incident the owners of Glasgow Airport issued a statement to remind drone operators that the consequences of a drone striking a plane could be “extremely dangerous".

A spokesman for AGS Airports Ltd said: “We would remind users that it is not only illegal to operate a drone within a restricted airspace, it is also extremely dangerous.

“We would urge all drone operators to ensure they make themselves aware of the restrictions in place by visiting Drone Safe website at www.dronesafe.uk.”
