Drone dropper who tried to get phones into Perth Prison awaits sentence

A Perth man who used a drone to try and drop a quantity of mobile phones into the city’s maximum security jail from a nearby bakery was remanded in custody to await sentence early next year.

Twenty-five-year-old Ian Luke Chalmers, of Fairfield Avenue, was on bail at the time – and also has two outstanding deferred sentences, Perth Sheriff Court was told.

He will discover his fate on January 6 after a Community Justice Social Work report and a Restriction of Liberty Order assessment have been prepared.

His bid to get the prohibited items into the Edinburgh Road jail took place on November 22 at the Tower Bakery shop in Perth’s Shore Road, at the rear of the prison buildings.

He admitted attaching the phones to the drone and attempting to drop them into the prison.

He was subject to a September 30 bail order from Dundee Sheriff Court at the time.

Represented by Perth lawyer Paul Ralph, Chalmers had a not guilty plea accepted to a second charge of trying to fly in SIM cards, tobacco and a USB mobile phone charger, again using a drone.

The accused is also awaiting sentence on two other matters, including the theft of alcohol and groceries from the North Muirton Co-op store on September 9.

Mr Ralph asked that his client be allowed his freedom while the background reports are prepared.

But Sheriff Neil Bowie ordered that he be kept in custody over Christmas and New Year, citing his previous convictions, he was on bail at the time and had two deferred sentences outstanding.

The background to the daring incident will be given next month.
