Dromgoole to run Shakespeare's Globe

Dominic Dromgoole has been appointed as the new artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe theatre, following Mark Rylance's decision to stand down.

For the last seven years, Dromgoole has run the touring Oxford Stage Company. Previously, he worked briefly as new plays director at the Old Vic, and ran respected fringe theatre The Bush for six years from 1990 to 1996. At The Bush he was something of a prodigy, having been appointed artistic director aged just 26.

Welcoming his appointment, chief executive Peter Kyle paid tribute to Dromgoole as a worthy successor to the "inspirational" Rylance, who has run the reconstructed Shakespearean theatre on London's South Bank since it opened a decade ago: "I know Dominic to be a wholly committed man of the theatre, with a passion for Shakespeare and a strong desire to engage with what he has described as 'the maverick energy' of the Globe," he said. " We all look forward to Dominic's own maverick energy being brought to bear on our 2006 Theatre Season."

Dromgoole will formally take up the post at the end of the year. Departing actor-director Mark Rylance has just opened in his valedictory production at the theatre - a radically scaled-down reading of The Tempest.
