Drogheda United snap up Colin McCabe as Liam Kearney appointed head of Cork City's academy

Drogheda United have snapped up Shelbourne goalkeeper Colin McCabe ahead of their Premier Division campaign.

McCabe is the fifth new signing that Drogs boss Tim Clancy has made following their promotion from the First Division.

He was previously at Celtic and had two loan spells with Stenhousemuir before joining Bohemians in 2017 and then Shels.

But when Shels snared Brendan Clarke from St Pat’s, McCabe was out of the picture and he said: “This seems the right move and I’m happy.”

But McCabe has a battle on his hands as goalkeeper David Odumosu was shortlisted for the SWAI Goalkeeper of the Year and won the Drogs fans’ Young Player of the Year.

“I have to respect David,” he added. “He had an excellent season last year. The manager has been quite honest with me, to come in and compete.

“I’m going to learn from David, and I think he’s going to learn from me. We’re going to push each other and make the goalkeeping department as strong as possible.”

Meanwhile, Liam Kearney has been appointed head of Cork City’s academy.

A former title winner with the Rebels, Kearney is returning to the Leesiders after a spell on John Caulfield’s staff at Galway United.

And before that, he was a coach with Cork City’s first-team.

Colin Healy had been overseeing the City academy until he was appointed senior manager on a permanent basis last month.

Kearney said: “I worked alongside Colin in the academy for three years, managing the Under 17s, and there are good structures, good coaches and good players.

“We’ve seen a lot of players progress through the academy into the first-team over the last couple of years, and I want to ensure that continues.”

Meanwhile, Dundalk have appointed their former player Stephen McDonnell as academy director.

McDonnell - who played for the Lilywhites between 2010 and 2013 - said: “This club has a rich history of producing some of the country’s finest talent - we want to get back to that.”
