Drogheda feud: Suspected key figure in ongoing war is first ever arrested for vile and 'intimidating' grave dig-up of murdered Willie Maughan's brother

A suspected key figure in the Drogheda feud has been arrested in relation to the sick digging up of a grave belonging to the brother of murdered William 'Willie' Maughan.

The young thug, in his 20s, was snatched by officers in Drogheda yesterday over the damaging of deceased Michael 'Bobby' Maughan's grave in Bohernabreena, Tallaght on August 18 in 2016 - four years on exactly from the day of the sick desecration.

This is the first arrest over the vile unearthing of Bobby's resting place as part of an "intimidation attack" by a three man gang.

Parents Helen and Joe Maughan believe this gang are also responsible for William and his girlfriend Anna's disappearance who were last seen in April 2015 in Meath.

It's believed the pair may have been killed by a Drogheda-based gang because the couple had information about a gangland murder.

On the night of the grave attack, it is understood that the trio entered the cemetery some time after 2am that night to carry out the act, although they did not remove Michael's remains.

The father-of-four died from meningitis in 2008 at the age of 30.

A relative of the two Maughan brothers celebrated the news of the arrest on their social media.

They said: "Thank god, we woke up to good news. Four years ago they dug your grave, it's all thanks to God that [you were] arrested [yesterday] morning."

Their father Joe previously said: "These people from Balbriggan and Drogheda are involved in my son's disappearance and what happened at the grave.

"They're trying to intimidate me. This was intimidation, this was a threat but we won't stop talking until justice is got."

A Garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "We have arrested a man in his 20s in Drogheda on 18th August in relation to an incident of criminal damage which occurred at a Cemetery in Bohernabreena, Co. Dublin on 17th August 2016.

He added: "The man is currently detained in Tallaght Garda Station under Section 4 of The Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"No further information is available at this time and investigation are ongoing."
