Driving theory tests, practical tests and lessons cancelled in lockdown

Learner drivers will not be able take lessons or tests for the next four weeks due to the second national lockdown.

The lockdown is set to be implemented in England from 12.01am on Thursday until at least December 2.

Not only will the lockdown - which is set to be approved by MPs today - shut bars, pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops, but it will require driving lessons, theory tests and practical tests to be cancelled.

A Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency spokesperson said: "Following the Government announcement on tougher national restrictions from Thursday, driver and rider training and tests will be suspended in England from November 5 until December 2 2020.

“We will be providing further guidance and contacting those affected as soon as we can.”

Tests and lessons were cancelled earlier in the year when the UK went into lockdown between March and July.

The backlog led to delays in securing tests once they were allowed to resume, a situation which is set to be repeated from December, when those whose tests were suspended will likely be given priority to book new slots.

The wait may be an expensive one for those who have passed their theory test but have been unable to secure a practical or have failed one before.

The DVSA has refused to relax a rule which only gives people two years to pass their practical after taking their theory test.

This means some learners who have already passed the theory exam will have to fork out to take a new theory test before they can sit their final exam., even though they were unable to book practical tests or take driving lessons for more than four months earlier this year and for another month now.

The DVSA will contact those whose tests are affected and tell them what to do next.
