Driving lessons and tests banned during four-week lockdown in England, No10 says

Driving lessons and tests will be banned during the national lockdown in England, Downing Street has confirmed.

Learner drivers will once again have to put their instruction on hold from Thursday when the country goes into a month-long lockdown.

Lessons were suspended during the first national lockdown but eventually resumed in July, leading to a large backlog of tests.

Asked whether driving lessons or tests could go ahead under the latest restrictions, the Prime Minister's spokesman said: “In both of those instances, the answer is no.”

Driving lessons have also been suspended in Wales during the country's fire-break lockdown.

It comes as Boris Johnson dropped his opposition to a second lockdown amid grim forecasts from experts over spiralling coronavirus rates.

The restrictions - which he previously described as the "nuclear" option - will come into force from midnight on Thursday if approved by Parliament.

The Prime Minister will address MPs on Monday afternoon over the lockdown that will close pubs, restaurants and non-essential retail, while schools, colleges and nurseries can stay open.

People will also be allowed to exercise and socialise in outdoor public spaces with their household or one other person.

Driving lessons and tests resumed on July 4, when a string of restrictions from the first lockdown were eased.

Instructors and pupils were told to wear masks inside the car unless exempt from the rules and all vehicles had to be cleaned thoroughly.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said at the times: "Driving lessons and tests are vital in helping people get to work and visit loved ones, and provide the skills for a lifetime of safe driving.

"As the country recovers from Covid-19 we can now open-up our services to help get the country moving again and I am very pleased to announce the restart of driving tests and lessons in a Covid-secure way."
