Driving Ireland: Thousands meet for deadly late night illegal car meet leading to big Garda arrests

There was lethal scenes on Irish roads last weekend as thousands of people descended on Meath for an illegal car meet.

It is understood that many Dubliners flocked to the large meeting as over 1000 cars gathered at the deadly event in the Navan retail park which started just shortly after 8pm.

Intelligence-led Meath Gardai were made aware of the event and set up several checkpoints throughout the area with speed checks in operation also.

Two of the drivers that were heading to event were arrested on suspicion of drink driving and three vehicles were also detained under the Road Traffic Act.

One of these cars was a defective vehicle with illegal modifications, another had no insurance and another was taken under the Clancy Amendment as the driver was an unaccompanied learner permit holder.

A Garda spokesman added: "We issued numerous fixed charge notices for speeding and other road traffic offences.

"Events such as these once properly organised with permissions and appropriate security in place can occur but not in public car parks with no organisation taken into account."

He added: "A number of court appearances are to follow."
