Driving carelessly through puddles can land you a hefty £5,000 fine and points on your licence

This morning saw the Met Office place a Yellow warning on Greater Manchester , as heavy downpours saw roads flooding across the county.

The rain has now died off , but the roads are still riddled with puddles - and are set to remain that way for a while yet.

Motorists are now being advised to remain cautious about their driving following the wet weather, as anybody caught driving without due care could face a fine and points on their licence.

Under section three of the Road Traffic Act 1988 , it's illegal to splash someone on the road if it is done 'without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place'.

The official Government legislation website describes careless and inconsiderate driving as such: "If a person drives a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place, he is guilty of an offence."

Why wearing a lanyard while driving could be dangerous

If you're found to have deliberately splashed a pedestrian, you could be hit with a £100 fixed-penalty notice and points on your license.

If the issue is taken to court it could even see you landed with a hefty £5,000 fine.

Confused.com's motoring editor, Amanda Stretton, has said: "Some people might think that driving through puddles is a bit of fun, with others accusing the police in this instance of overreacting.

"However, it can be a serious safety issue for drivers and is highly inconsiderate for pedestrians."

So next time you see a puddle on the road, be careful, or you might end up splashing pedestrians and cash.
