Driving ban for man who drunkenly drove round and round a community centre car park

A bereaved man drunkenly drove round and round a car park and ended up with a 17-month ban.

Thomas Watts, 30, was spotted at midnight and police found him inside the vehicle parked at Hucknall Community Centre, a court heard.

When they checked security cameras, they saw Watts had been circling the car park, said Ben Payne, prosecuting at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

"He was seen to be driving erratically," added Mr Payne as Watts admitted driving with 79 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. The legal limit is 35.

Ran Johal, mitigating, said that Watts had suffered three recent bereavements but had gone to the centre to celebrate his uncle's 50th birthday on March 17.

"On that day, there were mixed emotions because he had been going through a lot of bad news. Police, in fairness, said he was in a very emotional state.

"He was feeling low about life and reflecting on his life," he added on behalf of Watts who lives in Lime Tree Road, Hucknall.

Watts was fined £120 and must also pay £85 prosecution costs and a £30 government surcharge.

Presiding magistrate Simon Robinson told him: "There could have been people around inside the car park.

"You are a serious danger to the public when you get into your car and you are intoxicated. You were a long way over as well but have obviously showed remorse."

If Watts completes a course on the risks of drink driving, his disqualification will be reduced by 18 weeks.
