Drivers will be forced to make huge 46-mile diversion to bypass tiny road closure

Drivers are set to face a huge 46-mile diversion in order to bypass a 700-metre road closure in Somerset next month.

The stretch of road on the A372 at Aller, near Langport, will be closed between the junction at Church Path and The Seed Factory while Somerset County Council carries out resurfacing work.

The road is scheduled to be shut between Tuesday, August 25 and Wednesday, September 2 and the closure will be in place for 24 hours a day, according to Travel Somerset's roadworks website.

As a result of the work, a 46.2-mile official diversion route will take drivers an estimated one hour and eight minutes to complete - as opposed to the 50 seconds it would normally take to travel the road at the 30mph speed limit.

Travelling towards Othery, drivers will be asked to join the A361 and travel through Burrow Bridge and Durston before joining the A38 and travelling into  Taunton.

Drivers will then join the A358 through the town before heading past Henlade, West Hatch and Ashill before joining the Ilminster bypass on the A303.

The route follows the A303 past Stoke-sub-Hamdon and Ilchester before rejoining the A372 at Podimore and travelling through Long Sutton and joining the B3153 through Wearne, before taking the A372 once more and ending back in Aller.

The length of the diversion is a result of the closure being on an A-road - any official alternative route must use the same class of road.

These include taking New Way, Field Road and Nythe Road through Low Ham and High Ham before joining the A361 through Greylake towards Othery, and travelling along the A378 through Langport and Curry Rivel before taking minor roads through Oath and Stathe towards Burrow Bridge.

Unofficial routes are not suitable for HGVs and should be avoided if using larger machinery.
